I know I am impressed, now. I see norhtec has YouTube videos about the EduBook, demonstrating the scope of the EduBook, with XP and with Linux demonstrating CorePlayer media player, as well as additional uses for the Xcore86 chip. The shows hardware options available including battery pack options, an optional hard drive or a SSD, for that matter. It is clear the SD card should be Class 6, or better. In one video, at the link, the faster SD card is used. The options are impressive. For example: "Telcos can package the Geckos with GPRS, Edge, 3G, 3.5G, EDVO or other telecommunication modems. Users can choose any standard of WIFI they need or in places where WiMAX is available, WIMAX modules can be used instead. In addition to the internal USB slot, the Gecko provides three additional USB ports." The display is better outdoors than my netbook. The operating system may be quite easily changed. The end-user may change or upgrade components at a later time, easing the initial purchase price. I would say, the Gecko Edubook is for "grownups". I would use this Gecko netbook.

Thank you very much for pointing out the unique features of the Edubook's system on chip design. Please note that the version of the Edubook you are evaluating is an early preproduction unit. There is no fan in the production units as the production Edubook uses the bottom case as a heatsink. The production case was not ready for the preproduction units so a fan was used. Any comments about fan or fan noise doesn't pertain to the production units. Comments on performance are fair. The Edubook is designed for lightweight work as is any 1Ghz or less computer is. The primary purpose of the Edubook is to provide an very low cost solution to students and children. While you mention that there is only 100 Singapore dollars advantage to the Edubook, this compares the list price of the Edubook against street prices of others. The end user price for the Edubook is $199.95 USD. However, the edubook is offered in kit form that allows them to be assembled locally, thus cutting the price and creating labor opportunities. While the end-user price is $199.95, schools, organizations, dealers and reseller can receive very substantial discounts on the Edubook. The production units will ship October 1st. There will be many new products based on the same System on Chip solution.
